In honor of another National Basketball Association draft, particularly a Kevin McHale-led Timberwolves draft (please to note also the newer, less powerful logo, left; borrowed/stolen from Phoenix?), in where the 'Wolves pull off another, maybe more magnificant post-pick trade, I present the hilarious but accurate Kevin McHale's Big Man Camp, by way of 'Common Man' Dan Cole & KFAN Radio. Oh, to be the Matt Millen of the NBA...

Just go away NBA.

This is also too funny not to relay.

Minute DVD Review: Friday the 13th (Marcus Nispel 2009)

I was very much surprised with this latest American slasher reboot. In fact, the movie features a 15-20 minute opening scene that was very nearly an intense standalone mini-movie; an uncompromising and bloody vignette that sets the stage for something that the originals never had: a rescue mission which propels the plot instead of the classic final girl procedure. But the brutality does indeed extend into the main course of this movie. If you've seen any of the originals there's nothing much to add by way of review, but it behooves me mention that Marcus Nispel's Friday the 13th is extremely well executed slasher with pitch perfect pace for a contemporary mashing of the first few Friday the 13th movies. 106 minutes fly right by. It's also great to see a substantial, intimidating Jason Voorhees cast because past installments featured rather unimposing actors. And truth be told, I'm looking foward to Nispel's follow-up.[ Click for Official ]

Minute DVD Review: [●REC] (Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza 2007)

If your in the mood for a perfectly, and I mean perfectly, paced little piece of faux-vérité horror gold to scuttle any chance of sleep for a night, be sure not to miss the very moment [REC] hits whatever dvd shelves you frequent. Or go watch it now, preferably. Somewhere, somehow. Proceder a su propio riesgo, if you catch my drift. Directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza create shear clarity for the cast to act out some of our most primitive and childhood fears; the unknowable darkness, unfamiliarity, and fight/flight conflicts - yet don't confuse the irrational with what this film brings - notwithstanding the hint of Resident Evil (the video game). As a final word, and only so that my reputation as one of the true cynics remains in-tact: Leave it to some ham-fisted remake's trailer (ahem, Quarantine) to piss all over the the film's final shot. Gold Lion Review: Tantei monogatari (Detective Story, Takashi Miike 2007)

Takashi Miike, or Miike Takashi if you prefer, has always been upfront concerning Japanese filmmakers' need to produce multiple films per year to get by on film-making alone (he makes extensive comments on his Black Society Trilogy DVDs, among others) - often courting several production companies for a single film, employing no-name actors and actresses, wearing many hats, shooting sans permits, and last but certainly not least, making the most of the skimpiest of budgets; Miike's Detective Story fits into most of those categories. Gold Lion Review: Tokyo Gore Police (Tokyo zankoku keisatsu, Yoshihiro Nishimura 2008)

Based on his own 50-minute short film from '95 (intriguingly entitled Anatomia Extinction), Yoshihiro Nishimura almost puts the viewer, or more aptly reviewer, in a box with a nearly 2-hour flight of fancy called Tokyo Gore Police. One might either watch and be completely bored (admittedly I was early on), be amused, or relax into a drooling, pie-eyed state of fan-boy wonderment. As an understudy of sorts of the great Sion Sono and with his own brand of art direction on full display, Nishimura's characters can just as easily relay/portray the psychosexual fancies of the progressive acrotomophilist as they can the revenge driven nihilist...
